Event Description

Porto Business School welcomes, on the 2nd of September, starting at 4pm, the International Chess Congress - "STRONG MINDS", an event that aims to discuss how chess can boost the individual, organizations, society, and business.

The benefits of chess for individuals, society and business are highlighted at an international conference that is part of a larger chess festival.

Chess is widely recognized as a tool to train decision-making, planning, time-management, and self-responsibility. This goes for adults as well as for children, both as a competitive activity as well as a social activity. “Strong Minds” is the title of this conference that will delve beyond the individual benefits of this 1500-year-old strategy game. How can society benefit from chess? How can its analytic and logic processes help build business skills and shape entrepreneurial thinking?

The conference offers inspirational speeches, round table, a peek into chess thinking at the highest level, and networking opportunities. Speakers will include:

Dana Reizniece-Ozola, Grandmaster, former Minister of Economy and Minister of Finance of Latvia, CEO of the World Chess Federation.
- Nigel Short, World Championship Challenger, best non-Russian player, three times British Champion, acclaimed author.
Álvaro Costa, Associate Professor at the University of Porto, CEO of the transportation consultancy TRENMO, former President of the Portuguese Chess Federation.
Ricardo Valente, City Councillor for Economy, Employment and Entrepreneurship and City Councillor for Finance, Economic Activities and Inspectorate at Porto City Hall, Administrator of Porto Vivo, SRU - Urban Rehabilitation Society, Invited Lecturer at Porto Business School.

The best answer to the Chess Quiz will be awarded a signed chess board.

Following speeches and an interactive Q&A session, you will be able to connect over coffee, an aperitive, or a game of chess. The event will be rounded up by a simultaneous exhibition by Nigel Short who will take on twenty players.
If you wish to be one of them.
